About the Opening
The Executive Vice President (EVP) is the Platte Institute’s chief strategist and chief of staff. The creation of this position has contributed to the Platte Institute’s most significant period of growth and organizational success in its history. The incoming EVP will have the opportunity to take the Platte Institute and its team to even greater heights by removing barriers to opportunity for more Nebraskans and building a more effective movement for economic freedom.
With direction from our Board of Directors and CEO, our EVP leads our expert staff to ask and answer fundamental questions about the role the Platte Institute will play in Nebraska and the state policy landscape both now and in the future.
The EVP provides stewardship of the organization’s mission and vision in the work of each staff department, and advances the professional development and achievement of our team, while assuring that donor resources are applied to their highest and best use.
The right candidate is a mid-level professional with an interest in management and appreciation for strategic planning.
The Executive Vice President reports to the Chief Executive Officer and will work from the Platte Institute’s Omaha office.
- In conjunction with the CEO, oversee the implementation of the organization’s annual strategic plan and provide strategic consultation to the Board of Directors
- Oversee the execution of the development, communications, policy, and government relations annual plans
- Under the direction of the Board of Directors the CEO, manage employees and the day-to-day activities of the organization, which includes working directly with staff to ensure the organization accomplishes tasks to meet its overall goals
- Conduct annual performance evaluations for all direct-report staff, and make annual salary adjustment recommendations to the CEO
- Manage the professional development of direct-report staff
- Develop and manage the organization’s annual operating budget, with board and CEO approval
- Oversee contract bookkeeper and CPA to ensure all finances are being maintained according to state and federal regulations
- Manage independent contractors
- Oversee the independent annual audit and filing of the annual 990
- Maintain employee benefits and records, improve organizational processes and procedures, and assist with the development of short and long-term performance goals
- Coordinate the quarterly board meetings, prepare agenda, and manage board meeting minutes
- Report regularly to the Platte Institute Board of Directors on the organization’s performance and progress to goals and strategic initiatives;
- Represent the organization at Platte Institute-hosted events, speaking engagements, donor meetings, and community networking events, as assigned
- Travel: approximately 5% (in state and out of state conferences)
- 5-7 years experience required; some experience in communications, development, and/or project management preferred
- Experience in the liberty movement or a related public policy setting preferred but not required
- Strong commitment to the principles of limited government, free enterprise, and personal responsibility
- Strong leadership and project management skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Understanding of nonprofit management and finance
- Experience with database management required; experience with QuickBooks and DonorPerfect preferred
- Willing to execute day-to-day tasks and work independently
- Ability to prioritize tasks and follow through effectively
- Good sense of humor; ability to take your work seriously without taking yourself too seriously
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s degree (MPA or MBA) preferred
